I left behind my job as Manhattan-based publicist specializing in travel to attend graduate school in Washington DC. While my travel bug came along with me, my expendable income and travel perks did not. So, now I look for ways to satiate my appetite for travel on a student budget. I've traded my passport for a SmartTrip card and indulge my wanderlust in my new backyard of DC.

Dream Trip: Park City, Utah

Real Trip: Davis, WV
Distance from DC: Approximately 3.5 hours

If all of the buzz around the Sundance Film Festival, and photos of Hollywood stars frolicking around the cozy mountain town, has you itching for a ski getaway of your own- pack your bags and load John Denver on your iPod- it's time to head to West Virginia. With no paparizi in sight, the town of Davis, WV, offers winter sports, shopping, and dining options minus the crowds and price tag. The quaint town is nearby two major ski areas- Timberline Four Seasons Resort and Canaan Valley Resort which makes it the perfect basecamp for exploring the great outdoors. Besides skiing, other adventurey options include hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and ice-skating.

The apres-ski scene in Davis, while not quite as glamorous as Park City, doesn't disappoint. Visitors willing to embrace the small-town vibe, and local flavor, will find the low-key environment to be a welcome retreat from urban life. Blackwater Brewing Company, the town's only brewpub, serves authentic German cuisine and unique craft beers, along with live entertainment. For foodies, the ever-popular Sirianni's Cafe offers delicious Italian food at reasonable prices in a cozy, lodge-like space. Known for their unique pizza creations, the wait can get long so call ahead if you'll be with a big group. Afterwards, head next door to Muttley's Downtown, a quintisential small-town bar/restaurant with pub grub and games such as darts and video poker. Across the street, Hellbender Burritos offers a hip, fun alternative with- you guessed it- burritos and local brews.

The two nearby ski areas offer accomodations on-site for those looking for a ski-in, ski-out type of lodging experience. However, this tends to be the more expensive option. Alternative nearby accomodations include a Best Western, Village Inn Motel, Deerfield Village Resort, and Black Bear Resort. If you're going with a group, renting a house is likely your best bet. Mountain Top Rentals has lots of options regardless of the size of your group.
